I am Robert Kayton, Ph.D. clinical psychologist, who developed this program during my 36 years of clinical practice.
In my early days as a psychotherapist, I focused on insight-oriented therapy. After several years, it became apparent that although patients gained a greater understanding of their problems, their problems often remained unresolved. I soon realized that just having better knowledge did not necessarily lead to success. I then began to search for treatment methods that were practical, problem-focused, and demonstrated by clinical research to result in successful outcomes. What emerged was a combination of stress management, to reduce disturbing emotions, cognitive therapy, to modify negative and disturbing thoughts, and behavioral therapy, to change self-defeating behaviors.
A.R.T. not only uses the many tools and techniques from these well respected treatment methods, but does so in a strategic, integrated and comprehensive way. In addition to relying on the many advances from these psychological studies, we also include the advances made in the neuroscience field that demonstrate the link between the brain, body, and mind.
